MORE information still needed

a neon sign that says more on it

by Paul Kern , Chair

[October 19, 2025] We still have so many questions. We've seen some answers floating around the web, but nothing has been sent to us (the Vote No School Bond Committee) directly in response to the October 3 Letter to Superintendent. [See below.]

Any (and all) answers to our questions should be coming directly from the School District to the voting public as a whole -- to the Taxpaying Citizens -- so everyone may see what the answers are (and are not) saying. Not sent through any third party. Because of the lack of timely answers, I'll continue to ask the unanswered questions until the day we vote on the Bond Issue on Tuesday, November 4.

Here are some key questions. [To date, no response. ]

  • The public is waiting for the complete estimate for the renovation with all the details from the Dubuque Community School District to determine for ourselves if the 109-million-dollar figure is what the public wants in a renovated/air-conditioned building.
  • So we need to build a completely new school for 200 more students? ... You expect the taxpayers to pay $121.9 million when we could do this for much less?
  • As requested from us, do you plan on providing a detailed estimate for the renovation plans to the public showing the breakdown of what you would do to renovate Washington Middle School? The public needs to know the specifics, not just a what-if dollar amount.
  • Why would it not be reasonable to expect that the renovation be done in a similar manner as what was done at Dubuque Senior High? In phases over the summer months, with no need to disrupt classes during the school year.
  • Most of the answers we've seen from the School District are at the 1,000-foot level. We want detailed explanations.

We continue to ask for specifics, but that information is not provided. Only generalities. And that's not what we're looking for.

[October 20, 2025] A follow-up email has been sent to the Dubuque Community Schools asking them to respond to the unanswered questions in the original October 3. We've added these questions as well:

  • How many busses presently serve Washington Middle School each day?
  • How many busses serve Jefferson Middle School each day?
  • What is the length of time spent by a student who rides the bus to either school in regards to the first one picked up in the morning and the last one dropped off after the afternoon classes?
  • Will the time spent on the bus for the first student and last student change if the schools are combined on Lombard?
  • If the schools are combined into one school, how many busses are going to serve the one school?
